Ralph McInerny to Receive the Rev. James V. Schall, S.J. Award and Deliver Lecture

The Tocqueville Forum on the Roots of American Democracy is pleased to announce that Ralph McInerny, the Michael P. Grace Professor of Medieval Studies at the University of Notre Dame, has been selected as the recipient of the inaugural Rev. James V. Schall, S.J. Award for Teaching and Humane Letters.

The conferral of the Award will take place in conjunction with Professor McInerny's Schall Lecture, “There Was a Man! On Learning to be Free,” which will cast a sweeping eye over Fr. Schall's career as a writer, journalist, essayist, philosopher, and wise assimilator of the thought of popes John Paul II and Benedict XVI. The conferral of the Award and the Schall Lecture will take place on Thursday, April 10, 2008 at 6:00 p.m. in the Georgetown Marriott Conference Center.

Created in November 2007 through the support of Georgetown University alumnus (and former Schall student) Michael Maibach and the Maibach Foundation, The Rev. James V. Schall, S.J. Award in Teaching and Humane Letters honors the contributions and example of Fr. James V. Schall, S.J., a professor in Georgetown's Department of Government. A beloved teacher and widely-read author, Fr. Schall embodies the ideal of the teacher-scholar. The Tocqueville Forum will honor individuals who share Fr. Schall's commitments to teaching and humane scholarship as well as his fierce devotion to transmitting the wisdom of our Judeo-Christian heritage to future generations. The Award is conferred annually on the campus of Georgetown University, at which time its recipient delivers the annual Schall Lecture and receives a $5,000 award prize.
