2009 Fr. Schall Award Winner Announced

The Tocqueville Forum is pleased to announce that Dr. Leon Kass will be the recipient of the second annual Rev. James V. Schall, S.J. Award for Teaching and Humane Letters for 2009. This award, generously supported by Michael Maibach – a former student of Father Schall – and The Maibach Foundation, has been created to honor individuals who embody the teaching excellence and scholarly breadth and impact of the Rev. James V. Schall, S.J., Professor of Government at Georgetown University. The Award is conferred annually upon an individual who shares Father Schall’s commitment to liberal education, the great books, and the philosophical and religious traditions of the West. Dr. Leon Kass has exemplified this commitment through his life and work. In conjunction with the Award ceremony, Dr. Kass will deliver a lecture titled “Defending Human Dignity: What It Is and Why It Matters.” The conferral of the Award and the lecture will be held on March 23, 2009 at a Georgetown University location to be determined. Mark your calendars for what will be an exciting and memorable evening.

"Freedom is, in truth, a sacred thing. There is only one thing else that better deserves the name: that is virtue. But then what is virtue if not for the free choice of what is good?"

- Alexis de Tocqueville
