Rev. James V. Schall Student Essay Contest DEADLINE EXTENDED

The Tocqueville Forum on the Roots of American Democracy is pleased to announce the First Annual Rev. James V. Schall, S.J. Student Essay Award.  We invite all Georgetown University undergraduates to participate in this award, honoring our beloved professor and priest, Rev. James V. Schall, S.J.

Contestants are asked to read Father Schall's article: A Reflection on the Classical Tractate on Tyranny:  The Problem of Democratic Tyranny and then write a 1500 word essay reflecting on the article while answering the following question:  Can democratic tyranny exist in the United States?

The Award will include a cash prize of $500, a certificate of recognition, and an autographed copy of one of Father Schall's books.  Copies of the essay will be distributed at the award ceremony and posted on the Tocqueville Forum's website.  We will award three "honorable mentions" who will receive an autographed copy of one of Father Schall's books.  

The conferral of the Essay Award and honorable mentions will be held in conjunction with the conferral of the annual Rev. James V. Schall, S.J. Award for Teaching and Humane Letters for 2009, given to a teacher and scholar exemplifying these same commitments.   The 2009 recipient of the Schall Award is Dr. Leon Kass, of the University of Chicago, and the American Enterprise Institute.   The Ceremony will be held on Monday, March 23, 2009 at 7:30pm in the Copley Formal Lounge at Georgetown University.   

Essays should be submitted electronically to Dr. Steven Brust, Associate Director of the Tocqueville Forum, no later than March 6, 2009.  The essays should be no more than 1500 words, double spaced, with the applicant's name in the top right hand corner.
