Ecological Decline and Wendell Berry's Vision of Hope

Ecological Decline and Wendell Berry's Vision of Hope

Jason Peters, Professor of English, Augustana College

Despair in an age of ecological decline comes not from all the bad news but from the modern notion of nature and our relationship to it—namely, that it can be made to conform to our desires. Peters defended an argument that Wendell Berry has maintained for close to four decades: hope in such an age lies not in the ends but in the means of altering that relationship.
