Dr. Matthew Crawford, a Fellow at the Institute for Advanced Studies in Culture at the University of Virginia is the author of the recent bestseller . Dr. Crawford led the Welcome Week discussion, arguing that one’s time at a university is for the cultivation of the intellect rather than a training ground for a career.

"Freedom, the Human Vocation, and the Catholic University"


Dr. Mark Shiffman, Assistant Professor of Humanities and Classical Studies at Villanova University, gave a lecture on “Freedom, the Human Vocation, and the Catholic University”. Dr. Shiffman argued, granted that liberal education is self-understanding, the Catholic university best "frees reason to be free" and, thus, best accomplishes the mission of the university.
