Highlights from the 2022 Institute

Growing up, I never considered that graduate school, yet alone a PHD, could be a reality for me. The PS-PSI gave a honest, accessible, and informative view of what it looks like to pursue a PHD, especially for students from marginalized backgrounds. As a participant, I was able to hear from students and faculty on why pursuing a PHD can be intellectually enriching and a way to pursue your passions in a rewarding environment. While I ultimately pursed a different form of graduate school, pursuing a joint PHD is still in the back of mind because of the time I spent at this institute!

The PS-PSI 2022 brought 19 juniors and seniors in college considering a PhD in political science to the Georgetown campus from June 06 to June 10.

Students had the opportunity to meet other undergraduate students with similar interests, and to interact and network with university leadership, faculty, and graduate students from Georgetown University. Throughout the week, they were introduced to the goals, substance, and methods of political science; what applying to graduate school entails; the experience of being a graduate student and political scientist, and the careers that political science PhDs can pursue. They presented their own research proposals and workshopped graduate application materials.

Ryan Bookstein, a 2022 participant who is now pursuing a PhD in Government and Politics at the University of Maryland, said:

“The PS-PSI provided me with a wonderful look into the lives of graduate students, as well as faculty. I was able to polish my graduate school application through the tips I learned and learned helpful skills I will take to my Ph.D. program.”

The week closed with a formal dinner at Riggs Library, where participants were recognized for their contributions to the program.
