Capstone: Practicum I & II

The Conflict Resolution Practicum I & II series is equivalent to an M.A. capstone. The Practicum is a project-based, team-based, experiential course. During the Practicum, students form teams, work with an outside partner, plan, create and deliver a real-world project that requires them to apply their knowledge and develop practical skills.

This is the first of three connected, experiential courses for the Conflict Resolution M.A.:

  1. Practicum I (fall semester)
  2. Practicum II (spring semester)
  3. Summer Field Fellowship & Intersections course (summer semester)
    • GOVT 5410, Intersections
      • on-line, mix of synchronous & asynchronous content,
      • also includes pre-departure safety and security briefing content,
      • includes debriefing upon return to campus.
    • Summer Field Fellowship placement (minimum of 6 weeks, up to 10 weeks)
  4. Nota Bene: Skills electives are held in person, on campus over two weeks in late July through early August.

These courses are designed for students to gain real-world experience applying the skills and knowledge gained in other areas of their MA program. Additionally, students will develop and practice soft skills that are necessary in the conflict resolution field and on the job market.

The Practicum provides students an opportunities to become substantially acquainted with a particular dimension in the conflict resolution field, cultivate a range of practical skills and contribute to their career development.

Practicum projects respond to the particular interests and skills of the students’ teams AND serve the needs and interests of partner organizations. In designing and carrying out their Practicum projects, students are expected to follow a set of ethical guidelines for working with partners.
